IKKAT WEAVING

Ikkat is the ancient technique of resist dyeing pattern onto threads before weaving. The process is mathematical, exacting and labour intensive.

Ikkat is characterised by it’s feathered edges between colours.

Sections is warp and/or weft are counted stretched and held under consistent tension on a frame.

Stretched threads are marked, indicating the areas to be tied (resisted) and areas to be left open for due to penetrate

.The marked sections of thread are bound and tied

The yarns are then dyed

For complex designs requiring multiple colours, dyed threads are selectively unwrapped, restretched on the frame, re wrapped and submerged in different dye baths. The previously dyed area remains protected if tied or gets overdyed if exposed.

Dyed yarns are then all unwrapped and organised onto a loom for weaving
